Under the volcano

Four days in La Fortuna. Slow where it can be, precise where it counts.

Land, drive north, exhale

Travel day, on purpose. Wheels down at SJO around midday, then a slow green climb through coffee country and cloud forest until the volcano fills the windshield. Nothing is scheduled tonight. The only real deadline is sunset at 5:51, because this road is no fun in the dark.

TRAVEL

Immigration, bags, pick up the rental. Water and snacks before leaving the airport orbit. The goal is to be rolling by 2:30 at the latest.

The drive to La Fortuna

118 km via San Ramón. There is a famously foggy stretch of cloud forest about twenty minutes past town: low beams, no hurry, Waze over Google Maps. Then the road tips downhill and the volcano appears.

Keys and a grocery run

Check in, drop the bags, breathe. Then a quick supermercado sweep for breakfasts, fruit and beers before the stores close.

CHILL

A proper casado at a soda, a plate of rotisserie chicken, or the open air food hall if two people want two different things. Work if you need to. The wifi is fast and the jacuzzi is faster.

La Fortuna Waterfall

About 530 steps down into the canyon to a 70 meter falls, and yes, you can swim in the pool below it. This is what the swimsuit is for.

YOUR CALL

The tour can end in a volcano heated river: warm pools in the rainforest, steam in the rain, dinner after the soak. A perfect ending or a skippable one.

Dealer's choice

One activity today, and it is not my call. Sleep in, long breakfast, then a morning slot for whichever one wins. August rain builds after lunch, so early is the smart play. The afternoon stays empty on purpose.

Slow morning

CHILL

Gallo pinto and coffee, no alarms worth the name. The cone hides in cloud most of the time; morning is your best window to catch it.

Whatever the afternoon brings

Pool, jacuzzi, a wander, rain on a tin roof. If a coati ambles past, that counts as an activity.

Coffee, laptop, vuelta

The flight home is whenever it is. One more slow morning if the schedule allows, a bit of wfh with a better view than usual, then the green road back to San José in daylight.

WFH

Emails with a better view than usual. Pack between meetings and fill the tank before the car goes back.

The drive back

The same road in reverse, minus the novelty, plus the memories. Cross the cloud forest in daylight, before the afternoon rain.

Cacao pods ripening on the tree
Don Olivo chocolate tourOPTIONAL

A small family farm up the road: cacao pods straight off the tree, beans roasted over a fire, chocolate you grind yourself and drink standing in the grove. About two hours, and mornings work best.
